LAS in DC returns in March 2018 – Get Involved!

During Illinois’ spring break (March 18-24), sixteen students from the College of LAS career development course “LAS in DC” will be in Washington, DC!

Last year, the course met with over thirty DC Illini. Please be in touch with course founder and co-instructor Melissa Schoeplein (mschoepl@illinois.edu) if you are interested in assisting in the following areas:

  • hosting our group for a work site visit the week of March 19th
  • participating in a networking reception from 6-8 pm one evening the week of March 19th
  • hosting the networking reception at your place of work (we need a room large enough to fit 40 people; University of Illinois will pay for catering)
  • meeting with a student for a one-on-one informational interview (new!)

We hope to involve many DC Illini in this field experience. The theme of the course is “organizational cultures” so we’re seeking alumni from diverse work settings – executive branch agencies, legislative branch, NGOs, politics, military, private sector, and more. Melissa Schoeplein is happy to answer any questions you may have to better understand the opportunities to connect with students.

Thank you for considering helping with this transformative student experience!

Quotes from 2017 participants:

“LAS in DC was a great introduction to many realms of work in D.C. -- government, consulting, international opportunities, media, and more. It helped me learn about what my options were, both immediately after graduation and for the long term.”

“Before this trip, whenever I thought about life post-graduation it seemed easy to default to a formulaic mindset. . . Having the opportunity to hear people’s stories to how they got where they are today humanized the process and broke down the formula — obliterated it, actually — because as much as we want to force it, there isn’t a recipe or straight line path to success.”

“The LAS in D.C. trip opened my eyes to the many opportunities that wait after graduation. It has put things into perspective for me as to what my priorities need to be in order to accomplish my career and personal goals.”

“Meeting with so many notable alumni and especially those that have graduated from LAS made me realize that there are opportunities out there that would really fit well with my LAS degree. Being in DC really inspires you to want to make a change and have an impact on the country you live in, no matter if you are working in the federal government or elsewhere. Seeing and experiencing the atmosphere of working in DC truly helps you to picture yourself living there and what post-graduate life can be like there.”

“LAS in DC has been the highlight of my college career thus far and I am profoundly appreciative of the opportunity.”
